DENTAL IMPLANTOLOGY

There is no modern dentistry without implantology. Implantology is a part of dentistry that deals with embedding of dental implants. There are various types of implants. Implants are made of titanium, biocompatible materials, inserted in the jaw as a replacement for natural tooth, i.e. as a replacement for the natural root of the missing tooth.
The intervention is painless, it is performed under a local anaesthesia. Prior to the surgery, it is necessary to do the X-ray of the jaw and to visit the expert implantologist. The type of the implant to be used depends from the condition of the bone and the special wishes of the patient.

With the help of dental implants, the problem of one or more missing teeth ceases to exist. The problem of all teeth missing can also be solved with the implants that assume the role of supports and replace the roots.
If the patient follows the instructions for maintaining oral hygiene and visits a dentist on regular basis, dental implants can last for life.

MINI IMPLANTS - Total Dentures on Implants

Mini dental implants are implants of small diameter.

They are an ideal solution for toothless patients who have loose lower dentures and want a safe solution that will fix them. In this way, the total dentures become more stable, and the process of chewing food also becomes more efficient. Hygiene is very simple.

IMPLANTOLOGY – FAQ (frequently asked questions)

What is an implant?

An implant is a small titanium screw. It is built into the patient’s jaw during minor surgical intervention. The implant replaces a natural tooth root. It can be built in the upper or lower jaw. After a while, the implant will grow into the bone and assume the role of the tooth root. It can serve as a support for a crown or a prosthesis.

What is a success rate of the procedure?

The percentage of successfully inserted implants at the clinics VESELINOVIC is 99,4%. A usual success rate in dental implantation is around 94%.

Will an implant be a good solution for me?

People missing one or more teeth are candidates for implant inserting. The only obstacle might be a condition of the jawbone and possible chronic illnesses. However, there are corresponding solutions in such cases. Your oral implantologist is the only person able to decide whether you are the candidate for implantation or not. Upon X-ray imaging and taking insight into the condition, the implantologist will explain to you whether you can do implantation or your bone needs to be substituted prior to implantation. In some cases not even that can help, but you will learn everything upon examination and X-ray imaging.

Does my age represent a problem for implantation?

Older patients frequently think that their age might represent an obstacle for implantation. However, the most important factor is the patient’s health condition, irrelevant of age. If the person is healthy and can handle tooth extraction, it can be assumed that the health condition is good enough for implantation. Upon examination, oral implantologist will give you some advice on the kind of treatment ideal for your condition.

How will the implant influence my quality of life?

The artificial tooth on the implant assumes the role of the natural tooth. That means that the patient is able to eat and drink whatever he/she wants. Patients usually feel awkward and concerned before the decision on implantation. Their self-confidence and quality of life significantly increase after the implantation.

Is it possible to have a natural appearance of teeth after the implantation?

It is highly probable that the appearance and functionality of the implant will exceed your expectations.

Will I be able to chew with the same force as before the implantation?

You most definitely will. After some time necessary for accommodation, the feeling will be just the same as in the natural teeth.

What are the advantages of implants comparing to a classical prosthesis?

There are several advantages:

  • Permanent solution - after the oral implantologist inserts the implant, nothing else is required.
  • It keeps teeth healthy – when traditional procedures, such as making bridge, are used, it is necessary to recontour adjacent teeth so they can receive a rigid bridge – prosthetic substitution. Implantation excludes the need for recontouring and by that destroying healthy teeth.
  • It looks better – if you lose a tooth (including the crown and the root), the decrease of the jawbone can cause aging of your face. Implantation can stop that process.
  • Of course, there are implant systems as stabilisers for total prostheses. They are done in case when a patient loses all the teeth (more often in the lower jaw) and implants are positioned in the frontal area to protect falling of a total prosthesis out of the jaw.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure is done in 4-5 phases.

I phase
Implantation (approximately 10 minutes for each implant)

II phase
Placement of a gingiva former, impression taking (minimum 3 months after the first phase, 3-4 months)

III phase
Testing of the metal skeleton of the future prosthetic substitution

IV phase
Finishing work – cementing of the finished work.

Is the procedure painful?

The implantation procedure is done under local anaesthesia in order to avoid pain or discomfort. However, as in any other surgery, the patient might feel a slight discomfort. But the majority of patients is pleasantly surprised, because they expect much more pain and discomfort.

Can i use a whitening toothpaste if i have implants?

Whitening toothpastes contain abrasive particles which after some time can make the surface of the new crowns rough, thus causing depositing of plaque and easier pigmentation of the artificial and natural teeth. Our recommendation is to use a regular toothpaste without micrograins for daily hygiene.

Is the use of a mouth-shower recommended?

A mouth-shower only removes large quantities of food leftovers in your mouth. If it is not used correctly, or the water jet is too strong, a mouth-shower can even damage gingiva. So, if you clean your teeth properly and you haven’t used a mouth-shower before, it is not necessary to start using it for the implants in the healing phase. We recommend you to leave a mouth-shower for the time after inserting permanent implants and definite prosthetic work.

Do you recommend the use of a teeth disinfection agent?

There are several types of teeth disinfection agents, use it after consulting your dentist because some teeth disinfection agents are not recommended in the first phase of implementation, i.e. implant insertion, as they tend to slow down the healing of the soft tissues and bones.

How do I clean my teeth on the implants?

The crowns on the implants are cleaned just like the natural teeth, we clean them mechanically by using a toothbrush, a toothpaste and an interdental floss. For the bridges on the implants, we use an interdental floss or easy-to-use interdental brushes, particularly shaped for the interdental spaces. It is especially important to clean the interdental spaces and the area on the edge of the gingiva where dental plaque is formed which attacks the gingiva and the bone just like on the natural teeth.

HOW TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN AN IMPLANT?

The patients with the inserted implants should maintain as good the hygiene of the oral cavity as possible. There are special types and shapes of toothbrushes, dental floss and other toiletries, which the patients should use regularly according to the instructions of the dentists. They should come for regular check-ups for checking of hygiene and performing of clinical examination of the bones and soft tissues around the implants.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE CARE OF AND MAINTAIN THE NEW TEETH ON THE IMPLANTS?

The teeth on the implants should be maintained in the same manner as the natural teeth - or thrice a day (after the meal), and if it is not possible, than twice a day, in the morning and in the evening before going to bed. In individual crowns on the implants, interdental floss should be used as on the natural teeth, and if the implants carry a bridge, we recommend the use of special interdental toothbrushes or interdental floss for cleaning under the bridges and the areas between the teeth and the implants. It is important to clean well the space between the implants and the gingiva, as it is the place where the largest quantity of the bacterial plaque remains and can cause gingivitis or peri-implantitis. It is important to abide by the aforementioned procedure in the evening, before going to bed, as the bacterial plaque works mostly at night when the mouth is still. Crowns and bridges on implants require the same care as natural teeth.

HOW TO CLEAN A MOBILE PROSTHESIS ON THE IMPLANTS?

The mobile prosthesis on the implants is taken out and washed after every meal. It is cleaned on the outside and on the inside by using a toothbrush, and then the implants in the mouth are cleaned by using a regular toothpaste and a toothbrush. It is important to clean the structures on the implants in the mouth, as here the bacterial plaque can also cause inflammations and problems in time. If it is not done during the day, you should obligatorily do it in the evening. Every day put the mobile prosthesis in the disinfectant, and if it is not in the mouth, it has to stay in the water.

WHY ARE CLEAN INTERDENTAL SPACES BETWEEN THE GINGIVA AND THE IMPLANTS SO IMPORTANT?

A clean interdental space is important as in that area the bacteria in the food residues and in the bacterial plaque can enter the gingiva, separate it and enter into the bone, infect the bone and cause peri-implantitis that can cause a loss of the implants.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANING?

Doctors or assistants clean the bacterial plaque in the gingiva, or tartar above and under the gingiva which is impossible to remove by cleaning the teeth at home. Thus the hygienists polish the teeth and give them back their shine in order to prevent the bacterial plaque to adhere to the teeth.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO SUBJECT MYSELF TO А PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANING?

A professional teeth cleaning should be practiced 2 or 3 times a year, as that is how the implants are maintained in the best possible way. If you have problems with interdental toothbrushes and teeth cleaning, your dentist will recommend the frequency of professional teeth cleaning to you.

IS THE USE OF A DISINFECTANT RECOMMENDED?

There are several types of disinfectants. Medical disinfectants, that contain highly disinfecting substances, can be used only with the prescription and after the cleaning intervention. The disinfectants in the stores have a refreshing effect and absolutely do not replace a MECHANICAL cleaning with the toothbrush. Therefore, it is not necessary, and if you want to use it, use it after a proper daily cleaning.

IS MOUTH-SHOWER RECOMMENDED?

A mouth-shower is recommended after embedding the implants, after healing of the wound from the previous intervention and after a mechanical teeth cleaning with a toothbrush.
