Endodontics

Endodontics is a field of dentistry whose goal is the treatment of diseased dental pulp (both in the crown and root part of the tooth), as well as the tissues surrounding the root of the tooth.

In cases where advanced caries or dental trauma cause the pulp of the tooth to become diseased, then the tooth can be saved with endodontic treatment.

Endodontic therapy includes: proper diagnosis, canal instrumentation and root canal filling.

How do you know if you are a candidate for tooth filling or endodontic therapy?

Initial symptoms can be very similar – primarily pain and swelling. If you are bothered by any of the above, make an appointment as soon as possible!

When endodontic therapy is performed on a diseased tooth in a timely manner, greater damage can be avoided.

What procedures and instruments does endodontics involve?

The development of modern dentistry has caused the appearance of new mechanical instruments for the treatment of tooth root canals (nerve extraction).

Endodontic motors are part of this development because they provide dentists with the possibility of using special Ni-Ti files. Compared to stainless steel hand files, Ni-Ti instruments have greater elasticity and superior resistance to torsional fracture.

We know from clinical experience that mechanical root canal preparation is much faster and easier, takes only a few minutes, and is therefore more comfortable for the patient.

Advantages of mechanical endodontics

The advantages of mechanical endodontics are reflected in the following:

  • the procedure is faster, saving time is up to 50%, and this allows completion in one visit;
  • postoperative pain decreases;
  • canal transportation / tooth canal damage is reduced;
  • better devitrification of the root canal is achieved;
  • more comfortable and pleasant for the patient;
  • less fatigue for the dentist than when working with manual instruments.

What cases is endodontics used in?

Endodontic therapy is carried out in patients in whom, due to inadequate oral hygiene, there has been an accumulation of plaque on the teeth and the formation of caries. Bacteria from an untreated carious lesion penetrated the center of the tooth and infected the pulp.

In order to save the tooth, it is necessary to carry out endodontic treatment to remove the dental nerve and clean the tooth root canal.

What does endodontic tooth treatment look like?

Endodontic dental treatment is a minor surgical procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia and is completely painless for the patient.

This intervention involves removing the infected pulp tissue and cleaning the root canal. Finally, it is filled with gutta-percha, which will strengthen and preserve the root of the tooth.

The dental crown is then reconstructed with a composite filling, veneer or crown, depending on the extent to which it was destroyed by caries.

Why is endodontics important?

The goal of endodontics is to preserve the tooth, that is, to avoid or at least delay its extraction for a long time.

Sometimes endodontic treatment is preparation for more extensive prosthetic work, such as dental bridges.

Therefore, an endodontically treated tooth can serve as a carrier for a crown or a bridge. On the other hand, if the tooth cannot be saved, there is always an adequate replacement for the root – a dental implant.

Endodontics at the Dr. Veselinović Dental Clinic

A well-endodontically repaired tooth is the basis and condition of future dental treatment. This is the reason why at the Dr. Veselinović Dental Clinic, we focused special attention on this branch of dentistry.

Following world trends in dentistry, we have introduced a mechanical type of endodontics with the use of dental magnifiers and microscopes.

Mechanical endodontics

Mechanical endodontics is a state-of-the-art technology that provides numerous benefits. To clean and widen the root canal, special tools are used for processing the canal.

We carry out root canal treatment with NiTi machine protapers (expanders).

Is there another factor important for the success of endodontic therapy?

A very important factor for the success of endodontic treatment is undoubtedly a good clinical and radiographic diagnosis.

Within its X-ray room, the Dr. Veselinović Dental Clinic has the most modern devices for digital radiography (Soredex and Planmeca).

This device with extremely high precision, and with minimal doses of radiation, enables quick and comfortable diagnostics.

Our specialists are trained to work with this X-ray machine. The certificates they possess, extensive experience in clinical practice and significant results undoubtedly instill confidence in patients.

Therefore, we advise all patients that before they opt for tooth extraction due to a dentist’s lack of experience and limited knowledge telling them that it’s the only solution, to reach out to our clinic.

Teeth treated endodontically, with previous good diagnostics, are a safe base for conservative extensions, composite fillings, veneers or crowns.

Therefore, in cases that seem too complex to be solved, it is best to seek a second opinion and examine different options for preserving the tooth.

Our task is to do everything in order to achieve this.
